What is a Module Group, Module, Unit, and Lesson?

Module Group

Module Group is a collection of related modules that sit under one broad theme or objective. Think of it like a season in a series — each module explores a different aspect of the same overall topic.

Example: “Attacking Principles” could be a module group containing modules on “Build-Up Play,” “Creating Overloads,” and “Final Third Entries.”

In the example below, ‘Coaches’ Voice Content’ is a module group that contains four other module groups:

  • Masterclass

  • Coaching Sessions

  • Webinars and Presentations

  • Coaching Clinic

Within Coaching Clinic, there are two further nested module groups:

  • Formations

  • Principles of Play

This layered structure helps organise learning content in a logical and accessible way — allowing coaches to dive deeper into specific themes while staying within a coherent topic area.

Module

Module is a core topic within a module group. It offers an in-depth look at a specific area of development and is often designed to run over several weeks.

Example: The “Build-Up Play” module might include all the learning around playing out from the back, movement off the ball, and positioning.

In the example below, the ‘Formations’ module group includes 8 modules, each focusing on different tactical aspects.

Unit is a smaller section within a module that focuses on a key sub-topic or skill. It often includes theory, examples, tasks, and reflection activities.

Example: In the “Build-Up Play” module, one unit might cover “Positioning of the Back 4”, while another focuses on “Press Resistance in Midfield.”

In the example below, the David Artell module contains 1 unit.

Lesson

Lesson is a single, focused learning experience. It could be a video, article, task, quiz, or reflection, usually exploring one concept. Several lessons together make up a unit.

Example: Coaches watch a clip of Manchester City using wide overloads. After viewing, they answer a multiple-choice question to test their understanding of movement and decision-making.

In the example below, the David Artell unit includes two lessons:

  1. The Coach

  2. The Explainer

Creating a module - Need to add video -

All modules must be housed within a module group, so make sure to create both the module and the module group it belongs to.

The steps below walk you through how to set up each one.

To create a module:

  1. Access the Admin Panel

  • Click your initials/avatar in the top right-hand corner.

  • Select Club Settings from the dropdown.

  • Select modules

  1. Create a Module

    • Click “Create a Module.”

    • Choose Status “Unpublished or Published”

    • Add a TitleDescription, and Image.

    • Choose if the module should give Certificates or CPD hours (optional).

Note: You can add CPD hours at the Unit level later, even if you skip it for the whole Module.

  1. Add Units to Your Module

    • Click “Create Unit”.

    • Fill in the titledescription, estimated duration, and optional CPD points.

    • Click “Add Lesson” to begin building content.

 Building Lessons

  1. Create a Lesson Title
Start by giving your lesson a clear, descriptive title.

  2. Click ‘Add’
This will open the lesson builder.

  3. Each lesson can include:

    • Uploaded video content

    • Multiple-choice questions (minimum of 2 answers, with one marked correct)

    • A written article

    • A PDF

    • An embedded external video (e.g. YouTube or Vimeo)

  4. ⚠️ If you see “Content Unavailable” after uploading a video, don’t worry — it’s just syncing across devices.

  5. Structure Your Learning
You can add as many Lessons per Unit and as many Units per Module as needed.

Preview Options (Before Publishing)

  • Generate a public preview link

  • Or secure it with a PIN (ideal for sensitive or proprietary content)

Note: Publishing content does not automatically notify or send it to coaches.

 Final Steps

  1. Set the passing score (in %) for the Unit.

  2. Click “Create Unit” — this returns you to the Module page.

  3. From there, you can:

    • Create additional Units

    • Rearrange the order of Units

  4. Make sure the status at the top is set to “Published”

  5. Then click “Create” at the bottom of the screen

Important: Add to a Module Group

Every module must live within a Module Group. Don’t forget to create one (see instructions below) so your module can be properly categorised and accessible.

Creating a Module Group

  1. Go to the Admin Panel.

  2. Click your initials/avatar in the top right corner.

  3. Select Club Settings from the dropdown.

  4. Navigate to the Groups tab.

  5. Click Create New Module Group.

  6. Add a titledescription, and image.

  7. Click Add Items to choose the modules or module groups you’d like to include.

Important:

  • A module group will only be visible if it contains at least one published module.

  • If the group includes only unpublished modules, it will not appear on the platform.
